Immigration requirements for workers in Canada
You need a work permit if you are coming to Canada and entering the Canadian labour market. There are different types of work permit; open work permit, LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) based work permit and LMIA exempt work permit.
Employer-specific work permit: Employer specific work permit is based on a job offer an employer is making. This can be either LMIA based or non-LMIA based.

The International Mobility Program let the employer to hire a temporary worker without a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The employer will have to submit an offer of employment through the Employer Portal. Subsequently, the temporary foreign worker must apply for a work permit.

LMIA based work permit
The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) lets employers to hire temporary foreign workers to fill labor and skill shortages. This is based on issuing a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Once an LMIA has been issued, the employer should provide a copy of the confirmation letter to each temporary foreign worker and tell each of them to apply for a work permit.

You may apply for an open work permit if you
applied for permanent residence in Canada
are a dependent family member of someone who applied for permanent residence
are the spouse or common-law partner of a skilled worker or international student
are the spouse or common-law partner of an applicant of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program
are an international student graduated from a DLI (Post graduate work permit)
are a student who’s no longer able to meet the costs of your studies (destitute student)
have an employer-specific work permit and are being abused or at risk of abuse
are a refugee, refugee claimant, protected person or their family member
are under an unenforceable removal order
are a temporary resident permit holder
are a young worker participating in special programs
In each of these situations, you must meet additional criteria to be eligible. Under an open work permit, you are allowed to work for any employer. There are also standard conditions that apply to all work permit holders. Even if you have no specific conditions on your work permit, you still must:
not work for an employer in a business where there are reasonable grounds to suspect a risk of sexual exploitation of some workers, specifically strip clubs, massage parlours, and escort agencies,
leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.
